Project Title: Investigation on the Role of Dendritic Cell and Natural killer cell activity against FMD Virus Infection
Abstract of Project :
Foot-and-Mouth Disease virus (FMDV) causes a highly contagious, debilitating disease in cloven-hoofed animals with devastating economic consequences. It affects the livelihood of millions of small-scale farmers and constrains the international trade in livestock and livestock products. My research project focuses on analyzing the interaction of FMDV with dendritic cells (DC) and natural killer (NK) cells. DCs are the pivotal cells which capture, process and present antigens and control the development of immunity. NK cells have the potential to eliminate viruses in the early stage of infection. During my project, a series of in vitro analysis will be carried out to study the response of DC/NK cells against FMDV antigens. Looking at how these immune cells respond to FMDV antigens will help understand the host response to the virus and will aid in the design of countermeasures to control the FMDV infection in animals.
